Aunty M’s Noah’s Ark Applique

The applique pocket for Aunty M’s Noah’s Ark applique design creates a pocket to store animal finger puppets. The design begins with the rainbow and applique cloud. The cloud applique is a standard applique design using three colors: one to stitch a placement line, the second to secure the applique fabric to the base fabric, and the third to cover the raw edge of the fabric. For the cloud, you would need to trim the applique fabric after it has been secured to the base fabric. This graphic shows the design with both applique sections completed. An applique embroidery design generally uses three color stops to create the design. However, there is usually no need to change the thread on your machine. When the machine stops, complete the next step and push the Start button on your machine to continue stitching.

The ark design in this set follows a similar process, but there is one small change that can help you to place the fabric correctly.

First, cut your boat fabric approximately 7″ x 7″.
Fold the fabric in half to create a fold at the top of the pocket. Press.
Stitch the part of the design that is used for making a placement line.
When the machine stops, line up the folded edge of the boat fabric against the extended seam as shown below.

When the second part of the applique process is finished, remove the hoop from the machine. But leave the fabric in the hoop. Using applique scissors or small sharp scissors, trim the excess fabric away from the stitching line. For the ark, you will be trimming on both sides and across the bottom.

Now that the fabric is trimmed, secure the hoop on the machine and continue stitching.

Extra stitching has been digitized to cover the raw edges of the fabric. Design details are often added at this point.
